Final Exam Review

1. Explain how to get to the server drives and your folder.
To get to the server drivers, on the desktop there's an icon that says server_drives you double click it. Then you go to My Computer and some other drives should appear and you click on the one that says jstudents drive. then you click on the folder of photojournalism then 1st period and you find your folder with your name on it.
2. Explain how we use blogger.com in this class
We use blogger in this to blog our assignments that are posted in akinsphotojblog.blogspot.com.

3. Explain the process of creating a pinhole camera
The process in creating a pinhole camera is that you get a can, you cover the whole thing in black construction paper and also through the inside also covering the lid. So no light goes through can then you create an opening on the side of the can, you cover the opening with aluminum paper and then you poke a small hole in the middle of the aluminum paper. Then you create a flap that closes and opens.
4. Explain how the pinhole camera works and how the image is transferred to the paper inside
The pinhole camera works by when you set your pinhole camera facing of what you want to take of you open the flap like for 3 seconds then you shut it. The image is transferred to paper through the small hole in the aluminum paper when the light is given through the small hole.

5. Know how to define and explain the 10 rules of composition, these 10 rules will be a MAJOR portion of the final and you better know how to recognize these rules, explain these rules and show me you understand them:
5a.  Rule of thirds- When the main subject or image is in place in one of the intersections of a tic-tac-toe square .
5b. Balancing Elements- When your subject is in place with the rule of thirds try to put something in place so it could balance out the photo. Having something in the foreground and something in the background and you will have balance in your photo.
5c. Leading Lines-
Having lines leading to the main subject or having lines that make you go through the image in your photo. Lines could be any type of lines, curvy ziz-zag, or wavy lines.
5d. Symmetry and Patterns (repetition)- Having something symmetrical one on one side and the other side something the same. and pattern or repetition some that is being repeated constantly.
5e. Viewpoint-Having a viewpoint is the way you take a photo from up high or from the bottom or from the side. having a good viewpoint makes a good picture.
5f. Background/simplicity- that nothing is distracting the subject of the photo. having a good background makes a good picture
5g. Create depth- Depth creating a picture being taken and makes walk right through it, having subject be in foreground and middle ground and background.
5h. Framing- Where the subject is being framed by something in the photo.
5i. Cropping- by making the main subject cropped by the other things in the photo. so its only the subject being shown.
5j. Mergers and avoiding them- when taking a picture try not to have something coming out of their heads or having them not come out with a missing arm or something try to avoid these.
6. Explain how action and emotion impact a photograph
It could impact the photo by making it a better picture, and the way we see the photo.
7. Explain how a photo can "tell a story"
A photo can tell a story by how the photo was taking, the reaction of subject and action,  and what they are doing in the photo.

8. Explain what the word "multimedia" means and share some examples of how we have seen them in class (on the blog)
multimedia is how we present stuff like life's of people, stories or even news. examples of multimedia are video, audio , text, or graphic design.
9. Know how to correctly write a caption. I HIGHLY suggest you rewrite the rules on your blog and find at least 2 photos on the internet, post them on your blog and write correct captions for them. This will be a MAJOR portion of the exam as well.
rules-
1st sentence
Subject -- action verb (present tense) -- object -- how -- why -- when -- where.

The verb should be in present tense and the sentence should answer the 5Ws and 1H.
2nd sentence

Subject -- verb (past tense) -- object (describes background [context] of the situation shown in picture.)

The verb should be in past tense and the sentence should provide background info we couldn't get from looking at the sentence.

10. Explain how "strong action" verbs enhance a caption
A strong action verb enhances a caption by
11. Explain how ethics come into play in regards to photojournalism and compare and contrast this with fashion photography. You really need to get the idea that changing photos to fit a need or to make something look like something else is VERY unacceptable in photojournalism.
12. Explain the difference between a portrait and a self portrait.
13. Explain what characteristics of a good portrait are.
14. Explain what the major differences are between newspaper and yearbook.

Choice Sheets

 Newspaper or Yearbook?
What I would like to join next year, I think I would be Yearbook I. Of what makes join this class next year is that you get to create a 2 page spread for the yearbook. And that's a thing I like creating stuff. Also you get to take pictures for the yearbook. Maybe it will be a fun class to join learning more of a photographer person.

Abondoned Theme Parks

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph.
The amusement park I would like to visit and take my camera along would be  the Takakanonuma Greenland, Hobara, Japan. This park interested me because the pictures token by photographer seems that it was a cool amusement park with fun rides, like shown in the pictures. I would totally go to that amusement park to take awesome pictures of the used to be rides.

 2. Post one photo from that park. You may use the photos from the link, or you can Google an entirely new photo. I would prefer to see a photo of the park in disrepair and not a photo of it when it was still operating.

3. Think of at least FIVE other unusual places you think would be of interest to photographers. List them
    •  old parks

    • abandoned cities

    • haunted houses.

    • ships

    • games at a stadium

     4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work.

5. Write a paragraph about why you think that it would be fun to document that location. Tell me what interests you about that place and what kind of photos you could expect to take there.
I think i would be fun to document an abandoned city. I think it would be awesome taking pictures of the buildings that are sort of falling down. Of what i would be taking photos of would be of the houses, cars , buildings, and many more other stuff... car being rusted off i think that would be a good shot to take of.

6. Tell me what it would take for you to go and take photos at your location. What would you need as far as equipment goes, travel plans, expenses you might encounter and what laws you would have to take into consideration to take photos at your spot..

From me to take photos at my location, of course i will need a camera specialized for photography. Food of course, and water, and other needs.  I would have to have someone go with me because i wouldn't want to go by myself on a abandoned city. Need to take plenty of money for the whole trip. And i would have to really be careful with going in there and also ask permission in going into the abandoned city.

Ethics in fashion photography

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
The changes that were made were that they made her face clearer, enlarged her hair from the bottom, made her eyes and also her eyebrows wider, made her neck larger, and her lips , they changed her tone of her face.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
I think its not acceptable to change someones eyes, lips, or the neck or her face. but basic stuff like her hair, makeup i think it is acceptable to change.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?
It would be wrong in doing this manipulation.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
The changes that are okay to change are like the hair the makeup, the toner of her face not to make that pail. Those are the changes that I think are okay to change. And the ones that are not are like the eyes, lips, or other parts of her face.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
The difference between fashion photography and photojournalism is that in fashion photography take the pictures of the person but when done they change some little details in the computer. In photojournalism i think its just taking the pictures the way they are and doing any changes to the photo.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?
The relationship that each type of photography have to reality is that either one time they either have to change something of the photo. How is changes the ethical is that it might always turn out good but also bad

Negatives Evaluation

1. From looking at your negatives, how many of your photos do you think turned out well?
I think all of my photos turned out really well. I don't think none of them turned out wrong.

2. How many of your photos appear like they will not turn out well? Why do you think these photos did not turn out (Ex: Over/under exposed, not focused, bad composition)? I don't think none of my photos well turned out bad .. they all seem they were all in focused and they all had good composition.

3. Select the negative image that you think will turn out the best when it is printed. Why do you think this photo will turn out well? the image that i think will turn out the best when it is printed is #6. i think this photo will turn out the best because it has good focus, composition and exposure.

4. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) do you think are present in your best negative? What evidence can you provide from the appearance of the negative to support your answer? the best technical aspect that is present in my best negative is the focus because their is no blurriness in the photo and the exposure is good. the composition is present they are lined up in a line which is leading you to the front person in the row.

5. What advanced composition techniques (Ex: rule of thirds, leading lines) that you have learned in class are present in your favorite negative ? The composition technique that is present is leading lines because they are lined up in row of desks.

Photo Manipulation and ethics

.A.  Summarize the main points of the story in 1-4 sentences:
April Fool’s Day in the United States. In Israel this year, it was simply portrait day for the new cabinet and photographer Menahem Kahana.. An ultra-Orthodox Jewish newspaper, someone had fooled with the image. Some photographers try and make a joke and fool other people by the pictures they've took but could cause them they're job.

B Explain why you think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable..
I think this type of photo is unethical because it might be a picture but you never know it might be a joke to the one in the photo.

A. Post the manipulation that you think was the most unethical, and explain why you think it was unethical.

This manipulation is the most unethical because they are putting things that are not even true and they didn't have that meeting so they are trying to say that they meet but in real life they didn't meet at all.

B. Post the manipulation that you consider the least unethical, and explain why you think it is not as bad as others.

This manipulation i don't consider unethical because it really doesn't matter of the guy and its not that bad as the others.

Drug Cartels in Mexico

 Story:
I think its sad how this is happening to Ciudad Juarez, one the dangerous cities in the world. But no one could do something about this not even the officers of Mexico could handle the drug cartels. All this innocent people are dying not even having the fault of getting shot at daylight. These people cant even live peacefully in this city, scared, terrified, that they must be in the middle of a shooting. Many people are dying 10 people a day are dying many of them are journalists that are dying for the past years. But what can we do about it. Only the future knows and god knows what will happen next about the drug cartels.

Video:
The photo that is my favorite is when Antebi shot the photo of a mexican officer. Where the officer is holding his gun and dressed up with his uniform and wearing his mask prepared for what comes up to him. Antebi used the technique of simplicity where the man is the main interest of the photo. Its my favorite photo because it shows that he is ready for whatever comes up. The attitude of his face shows that he is ready and he really cares about Ciudad Juarez.

Making a Black and White print

1.) List the materials (equipment) necessary to make a black and white print
  • trays,
  • an enlarger
  • a repeatable enlarger timer,
  • a paper cutter,
  • a paper safe,
  • enlarging lenses,
  • a safelight
  • way to hang up the prints to dry

2.) List the chemicals we might be using to make a print and where one would buy those chemicals

  • Developer, which causes the silver iodide of the film or paper emulsion to darkness  if its has been exposed to light.
  • Fixer, which removes the undeveloped silver iodide from the emulsion.
  • A chemical used to completely stop the development process is called stop bath, and is used between the developer stage and the fixer stage in both b&w film & paper processing.
  • You can buy these chemicals at any good camera store, if not you can also buy online.

3.) Summarize in one or two paragraphs the process from start to finish

4.) Post a photo of the equipment necessary to make a black and white print

1. emulsion-   a composition sensitive to some or all of the actinic rays of light, consisting of one or more of the silver halides suspended in gelatin, applied in a thin layer to one surface of a film or the like.
2. aperture-
an opening, as a hole, slit, crack, gap, etc.
3. masking easel -
4. exposure-
the total amount of light received by a photosensitive surface or an area of such a surface, expressed as the product of the degree of illumination and the period of illumination.
5. safe light-
a darkroom light with a filter that transmits only those rays of the spectrum to which films, printing paper, etc., are not sensitive.
6. dodging- (in printing) to shade (an area of a print) from exposure for a period, while exposing the remainder of the print in order to lighten or eliminate the area (sometimes fol. by out )
7. burning- burn in, Photography . (in printing) to expose (one part of an image) to more light by masking the other parts in order to darken and give greater detail to the unmasked area.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get close, capture real moments, and capture action or emotion? Explain how you dealt with these challenges. one of the challenges that I encountered was when taking a photo I would try to get close to the person, but then i didn;t want to be all up in their faces. And it was hard for when finding a person that had a good emotion on their faces.

2. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. The technical aspect that i had in mind the whole time was the focus.

3. Explain how you attempted to use at least one of the advanced composition techniques you learned in class while shooting. When taking the photo I always tried to get someone as the main subject .for it to be a simplicity photo.

4. What would you do differently the next time you shoot to improve your photographs? What i would do differently next time i shoot i guess tried to get pictures that have more of advanced composition techniques in it.

Processing Black And White Film

1.) List the materials (equipment) necessary to process black and white film
You will need:
  • running water
  • chemical manufacturer specification sheets
  • a place where you can mix liquids.
  • Measuring Beakers or Graduates
  • Very accurate thermometer
  • Stir sticks
  • Funnels
  • Maybe a water filter
  • Storage Bottles

2.) List the chemicals we might be using in the darkroom and where one would buy those chemicals
  • developer
  • stop bath
  • fixer
  • hypo clearing agent
  • wetting agent
3.) Summarize in one or two paragraphs the process from start to finish
First start in a completely dark room, put the film in a stop bath, pour in the developer chemical and from there begin the actual process of devoloping your film. Leave it about 30 seconds so the chemicals could stay on the film. Pour water into the open part of the tank to stop the development of the pictures. Place the fixer onto the film by pouring it into tank. it will take at least five minutes.
Then pour in the solution, and then fill it with cold water. Let the water set for 30 seconds, and then pour the water out. Wash your film, and then do a final rinse. Pour hypo eliminator solution into the tank and let the wash aid settle for two minutes. Put the film on a wash pin, but avoid touching the negatives. .

4.) Post a photo of the equipment necessary to process film

5.) Post a photo of the chemicals necessary to process film

 1. Contact Sheet- a contact print, usually of all frames of a developed roll of negative print film, used as a proof print.
2. Agitation-  to give motion to
3. Enlarger-
an apparatus used for making projection prints, having a head for holding, illuminating, and projecting a film negative and a bed for holding a sheet of sensitized printing paper.

4. Developer-a reducing agent or solution for developing a film or the like.
5. Stop Bath.-an acid bath or rinse for stopping the action of a developer before fixing a negative or print.
6. Fixer- a chemical substance, as sodium thiosulfate, used to promote fixation.
